Introduction to the French Language

French is a Romance language that originated in France and is now spoken by over 300 million people worldwide. It is an official language in 29 countries across Europe, Africa, North America, and the Caribbean, making it one of the most widely spoken and studied languages in the world. French is also one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union, the International Red Cross, and many other international organizations.

 French Language Proficiency Levels (CEFR)

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) divides language learning into 6 levels:


A1 – Beginner

A2 – Elementary

  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks
     
  • Understand frequently used expressions
     

B1 – Intermediate

  • Deal with most situations while traveling
     
  • Write simple texts and describe experiences
     

B2 – Upper Intermediate

  • Understand complex texts
     
  • Interact with native speakers with fluency
     

C1 – Advanced

  • Express ideas fluently and spontaneously
     
  • Understand a wide range of demanding texts
     

C2 – Proficient

  • Near-native understanding and expression
     
  • Mastery of the language in all aspects
